In the last year, the townhouses of 80 Daly Street have been torn down, as well as the Wally Elmer center. A large park, Shannon Park, is going in. So far there are some sports nets and a baseball diamond, and they are building an impressive looking skate park.
When I grew up in that part of town, 40 years ago, it was miles of low income housing stuffed into one neighbourhood, with nothing around it–a couple of corner stores, no services, no groceries, bad bus service. That has certainly changed now, but the north end is still given a raw deal. There is a dearth of good parks. Most are barren wastelands with a set of swings. So this park, if done right, could be the start of something big…maybe.
MacCauley Street will be extended up the right side of the lower picture. There will be a multi sports court, a splash pad, and a new community center attached to Rideau Heights Public School. I’m jazzed!
The path to Conacher Drive used to go through where these houses are now. There was a little stream with a bridge over it. This is where the community center will be.
Now it’s further west, connecting to a street that wasn’t there when I was young.
Some of the housing at 1130 Montreal Street–nicely treed now.
The City of Kingston is getting on to some good stuff these days. That makes me very happy.
