Belle Island used to be the Kingston Landfill. It is now mostly a golf course. At the outside end, there is some wild area surrounded by the river, and I noticed a very shabby looking basketball court. It is kind of the same peninsula shape as Stanley Park in Vancouver, and I bet it could be just as nice, if some effort and money was put in, but as with the rest of the waterfront, it is very under-utilized un-cared for. There could be nice trails around the outside of the golf course, but there are only a couple of half hearted trails and the little beach at the end of one is always strewn with garbage. In the last couple of years there was some debate as to whether they should keep the city-run golf course, and the golfers won. On this day, in early November, there were four hardy golfers out.
They don’t talk about “busy beavers” for nothing! A fence has been put up all along the river to discourage the industrious rodent.
The eastern side of the river–apartments and condos next to LaSalle High School, and some upscale homes. The grass is greener on the other side of the river!
I have too many pictures of Belle Island to do in a day, so I will post some more tomorrow.
